Star Trek Movie v – The Final Frontier (1989) – The Search for God and The Circling of The Drain

The_Final_FrontierHere we go: My least favourite favourite Star Trek movie, and Shatner’s Star Trek directorial and writing debut. What a freakin’ turkey.

So, there’s report of trouble on a planet that is a social experiment with the Federation,Klingons and the Romulans – they are trying to find out if we can all live happily together. Some charismatic cult leader has taken over the place and the only folks who are close enough to do anything about it…are the the crew of the Enterprise. They show up and are quickly captured. Some are sort of hypnotized to follow their leader – a Vulcan by the name of Sybok, (played by Laurence Luckinbill), Spock’s half-brother, who is offering freedom from fear and pain, and on mission to the center of the Galaxy – to see the face of…I dunno’… GOD? Yeah, and there is a Klingon Captain that wants to make his points by killing the infamous Kirk. Oh… I can’t continue.

UGH!!! I really disliked this freakin’ movie. Go ahead an watch it if you need to. I liked this movie more when I first watched it, but really didn’t like it much then. I don’t need my Sci-Fi heroes looking for God, and Shatner is NOT A GOOD WRITER/DIRECTOR. I like William Shatner a lot and this should be his “Popeye.”

God Bless America (2011) – Spree Killers That I Sympathize With

2011’s God Bless America is a masterful tale of a man that is just fed up with the dumbing down of America and does something about it.

I watched this movie on the suggestion of two of my friends (Thanks Clint and Sonny). They suggested a fantastic movie.

This is a Bobcat Goldthwait movie (both written and directed), that really hit me where I live. It’s a statement about how Western society (specifically the U.S. of A.) has degenereated to watching useless, despicable humans on TV as reality stars, and how common decency has fell to the side of the road and has been replaced with jadedness and laughing at the unfortunate and celebrating the worst parts of humanity.

Frank, a recently unemployed man who hates what America is turning into decides to take on that which he hates – killing reality stars and other losers that get in the way. Along the trip he manages reluctantly (at first) to pick up a teenaged girl sidekicj who is also sick of what her world is turning into. The two leave a trail of (deserved) destruction in the wake as they work towards a mighty goal (see the movie to figure out what that is). They also discover what makes each other tick along the way.

This movie made me root for a couple of killers – and that is a pretty amazing feat. If you are looking for a smart, enjoyable film, and you too hate the dumbing down of society, then I suggest you watch this movie – NOW!

Father’s Day (2011)… Holy Cow – What Did I watch?

Just finished watching the Troma film, Father’s Day and my head is still spinning. This Canadian production is what I like to call Nouveau Grindhouse: new movies with an intentional gritty, dirty and cheap made for the 1970’s Drive-In feel.

This film is brutal, gory, gruesome and socially unnerving… and funny. A supernatural gore-fest sexual comedy? I don’t really know how else to describe it. The basics? fathers are being killed, a young punk that is being harassed by a jerk cop, , a young, confused and wimpy priest, an ex cop, just out of jail for a revenge killing that went wrong and his stripper/hooker sister have to defeat the Satanic killer of those fathers. Fill in the middle parts with gore, horror, incest, murder, rape and some laughs. Yeah… that’s the ticket.

Watch it if you like the movies I have suggested on this blog in the past. If you don’t like the movies I have blogged about, then don’t watch this: you’ll hate it (are you reading this, Tim?). I liked it.
