Soylent Green (1973) – Slow Burning Sci-Fi

Soylent_greenIt seems to me that it is amazing that it took until yesterday for me to finally watch the 1973 Sci-Fi classic, Soylent Green, but it’s true and I am glad I finally did so.

Soylent Green takes place in New York City in 2022. The world is struggling to feed the masses a,d the human diet is primarily soy and plankton wafers (of different colours and quality) made by the Solent company. The wafers are found in red, yellow and the new, higher quality Soylent Green variety. When When New York city Police Detective Robert Thorn (played by Charlton Heston), is called to investigate the murder William R. Simonson, he discovers the dirty truth behind the Soylent corporation and their new wonder product, Soylent Green.

This movie paints an interesting if bleak view of the not so distant future: The humanity is struggling to feed it’s masses, while the upper crust lives in relative opulence. Rich executives have concubines (referred to as furniture) included with the rent of their homes. They get access to real foods instead of waiting in never ending lines for an allotment of tasteless survival food. Thorn’s persistent investigating turns up something very disturbing about the Soylent corporations new miracle food Soylent Green… Something that would definitely make it much less palatable .

This is an important Sci-Fi film, and I definitely suggest you watch it. It’s a bit slow, and if your Sci-Fi requires spaceships and laser guns, then don’t watch this as it will disappoint. But if you enjoy a good story then check it out.

The Keep (1983)–Should Have Kept Hidden

Keepposter1983’s The Keep is a long winded, confusing crappy storry about Nazi’s that release some ancient evil from a “Keep.:

Yeah, this is an ambitious tale, staring the usually amazing Sir Ian McKellen (actually, he’s the only strong part of this film)  and a handful of others that I won’t even bother looking up.  I couldn’t even pay attention, and I had NO distractions. If you read this blog even semi regularly, you know that it doesn’t take much for me to find something to like in a movie. I mean, lots of crappy 80’s synthesizer music, dry ice fog and Nazis and Demons…Should be good enough but it wasn’t.

Don’t bother with this one folks. And to think I almost bought the Blu-Ray!

Blubberella (2012)- I Have Watched the Only Watchable Uwe Boll Movie

Uwe Boll is probably my least favourite movie maker, and yet I’ve just watched a watchable  movie by him.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not a good movie, but it is a funny movie. A scene for scene spoof of BloodRayne…ummm 3 according to Wikipedia. Made with the same cast and location and crew, I’m guessing Boll probably filmed them at that exact same time.

An obese dhampir (half human and half vampire), joins the resistance and takes on Hitler and his minions. Completely tasteless, and inappropriate, it managed to make me laugh in a few places.

Want to watch it? Then you should – it can be found in the cheap DVD bin of many department stores. Would I recommend it? No, because I refuse to recommend anything Uwe Boll makes until the World realizes that he needs to be stopped. That said, I was not bored and I laughed – more than I can say about many of the movies on this blog.

Here’s the trailer:

Reader Suggestion: Blubberella

So I have received a new suggestion from reader, Brian: Blubbberella

Apparently an obese half vampire half human defeats the Nazis (or so I have gathered so far).

I’ll be watching this in the next week or so, so keep reading!

Captain America (1990) – Fun but Dumb

You know, I didn’t even know that this movie existed until earlier this week when one of my fellow co-workers suggested I watch it for this blog – I’ll definitely have to thank him for this.

This 1990 depiction of Captain America is a pretty shoddy deal, but is cheezy enough to stay fun.

Typical Captain America story: Nazi Germany (and the Italian Mussolini regime) develop a super soldier, the Red Skull, and the American’s do the same with Captain America. Bad things happen, Captain America gets frozen for 40 or so years, thaws out and continues his battle against the Red Skull. In this version, the President has been kidnapped by the Red Skull with the help of a general from the Pentagon, with the plan to implant a mind control device, therefore making the President little more than a puppet for the Red Skull. Of course, the newly revived Captain America must save the President (and the Free World with it) by defeating the Red Skull once and for all.

Silly, dumb, bad acting and Ned Beatty – I freakin’ loved this piece of crap. Don’t watch it because you love the Avengers or Captain America – watch it because you love bad movie, and you won’t be disapointed

And… you can watch the whole awesome mess on Youtube – and that link can be found after the trailer, below.

Here is the Trailer:

And here, my friends is the whole movie:
